Abstract
Excerpt from the Introduction: This dissertation is an exploration of the strengths and weaknesses of this public history project [initiated by Krishna Tewari] in Auroville. After introducing the concept of Auroville and considering recent literature concerned with Auroville and oral history, I will explore the methodological issues that we had to confront. Then I will investigate how recording personal memories can reveal hidden aspects of personal and community history. Finally I will consider how Auroville regards its past and suggest that memory can be used as a powerful tool to resolve problems in Auroville's present and shape its future.
