Abstract
This paper looks into the challenges faced by the social and environmental utopian community of Auroville, India in addressing its housing needs. The role of various planning and implementation agencies is analysed in this regard. Existing policies on paper and utopian vision are compared against ground realities and practices. These are analysed under three subheads: (1) Vision, (2) Rationale and (3) Reality based on the authors’ own experience and inputs from end users. Furthermore, current housing proposals are introduced and their relevance analysed. Recommendations are made based of the gap between theory and practice. The results can be helpful in planning for future housing needs of the community. This study is also of relevance to researchers of utopian communities as little literature is available on their long term functioning.
